jill barberCHANCES (ABC)RATING: 3.5/5Originally released in 2008 and now re-released locally by ABC Music, this is a chance to experience the lyrical, laid-back, 1940s magic of Canadian chanteuse JillBarber, as she works her way, supported by a suitably slinky orchestra, through 10 songs (three of which she wrote with Ron Sexsmith and five with producer-arranger Les Cooper). This is cool, seductive and sexy, with occasional forays into jazzy, up-tempo, gospel-blues on tracks such as Oh My My and Leaving You. The glorious mix of banjo, clarinet, strings and backing vocals from the oh-so-smooth Sojourners on Wishing Well is a nod to nostalgia and a study in classiness. Elegant music to belistened to with a martini in one hand and your sophistication switched to overdrive.
